October is a fun month to be in Lafayette! Between fall- and Halloween-themed events, there is something fun for every family to do throughout the month. Here are four of the most popular can’t-miss October events for families.
Covenant United Methodist Annual Pumpkin Patch
Starting on October 8, families in Lafayette will be able to head to Covenant United Methodist Church at 300 E. Martial Avenue to frolic in one of Lafayette’s largest pumpkin patches. The patch will be open daily through Halloween. On the weekends, anyone can enjoy free, family-friendly events such as a maze, hayride, face painting and concessions.
Special events at the pumpkin patch include a craft show on October 12-13 with local craftsmen and vendors showcasing their wares for sale. Free family Movie Night at the Patch is October 25, from 6 – 9 pm. There is also the Annual Health Fair with Our Lady of Lourdes where visitors can get flu shots, donate blood and more.
And don’t forget about your pumpkins while you are enjoying all this great family fun!
Gumbo Cookoff
The Realtor Assocation of Acadiana hosts the annual Gumbo Cookoff. This event is going into its’ 29th year. The Gumbo Cookoff benefits Maddie’s Footprints, Lane Everett’s Legacy, and Habitat for Humanity.

The event will take place on Wednesday October 26th from 5:00-7:30 pm, at Parc International. $10 for all you can eat gumbo.
Boo at the Zoo
October in Lafayette wouldn’t be the same without Boo at the Zoo at Zoosiana. This year’s festivities will take place on two back-to-back weekends, October 19 – 20 and October 26 – 27. On Saturdays, the event will be from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. and on Sundays from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. You will need tickets to attend the event and they are available for purchase in advance here.
Some of the family-fun festivities at Boo at the Zoo include a costume contest at 1 p.m. each day; small-prize games, live entertainment, face painting, sand art and more. Be sure to have the kids dress in their Halloween costumes to get the full experience of Halloween with the zoo creatures.
